Watercress Way Sponsored Walk

Exercise, get outside and support local charities!

Help make a difference!

Cllr Vivian Achwal was appointed as the 822nd Mayor of Winchester on 18th May 2021.

Cllr Achwal will be supporting Winchester Youth Counselling, Friends of the Family and The Eight Foundation under the umbrella charity, The Mayor of Winchester’s Charities.  Winchester Youth Counselling is honoured to be one of charities chosen and we would like to thank the Mayor for recognising our work.

The Mayor of Winchester’s Charities are holding a Sponsored Walk event on Sunday 15th August 2021.  This will raise much needed funds for all three of the Mayor’s Charities.

The 10 mile long, Watercress Way Sponsored Walk, will start at Abbey House, Winchester and will follow the Watercress Way to Itchen Abbas and then finish back at Abbey House.

Please note that you will need to be at Abbey House between 9.30 and 11.00 to start the Walk and finish by 15.00.

For some, 10 miles may be too big a challenge but please don’t be put off, you can complete half the circuit and finish the walk at Itchen Abbas, (but please make your sponsors aware of your target and organise transportation back to Winchester).  Maps will be provided on the day and there will be Marshalls and signposts along the way to guide you.

Refreshments will be provided at the end of the walk at Abbey House.

In order to take part in this event, we rely on you securing sponsorship. We are not charging you an entrance fee but it would be amazing if you could make a voluntary donation to help us cover the event costs.

Suggested donations:

£20 per family

£10 per adult

£5 for under 25s

Covid-19 – Staying safe

We take your safety very seriously and we are committed to delivering a safe event. The delivery of Watercress Way Sponsored Walk will follow government Covid safety guidelines.

Covid-safety measures included a staggered start to enable social distancing. All volunteers and marshals will be provided with Personal Protection Equipment.

If you are unwell or showing any signs of Covid, we ask that you do not participate in this event.

Winchester Youth Counselling is organising this event on behalf of the Mayor of Winchester Charities.  The objective is for participants to take part in a journey on foot from Winchester to Itchen Abbas and then return to Winchester.  (It is for the participant to organise their own transportation should they wish to shorten the walk and finish halfway or at some other point.)  On the day of the event, we will have a number of marshals along the route to help make the event as safe as possible for all the participants.

This is event is not suitable for people with mobility issues.

All under 16s must be accompanied by an adult, (adult accompaniment can be arranged by organiser if notified in advance).

Covid safety precautions must be taken when entering any premises, eg, face masks to be worn and hand sanitiser to be used.

We advise hand sanitiser is used after climbing stiles

We advise you take a mobile phone with you.

Some of the route is through fields and some areas may be overgrown, you will be required to use stiles on occasion.  We ask that you follow the countryside code and close gates after use.

Walkers are advised that other route users may have dogs and to keep a safe distance.

Please stay away from all livestock if encountered.

Please also be aware that you may encounter traffic on roads and must ensure your own safety and the safety of any children taking part. Please look left and right before crossing any road junctions.

Make sure you are prepared for the weather with sunscreen and water or waterproof clothing if required. Please wear appropriate footwear.

If you are participating and you feel unwell please ask for help from one of the many marshals or ask for help from another participant of the walk.  We will have a First Aider on call.

It should be noted that we do not count participants out and count participants in.

The event will not be marshalled after 2.00 pm.

We wish to use this event as a fund-raising activity to raise money for the Mayor’s Charities.
