Coping Strategies
Our clinical team have made the suggestions below to allow you to focus on what makes you feel better:
Spending time in a natural environment:
Getting outdoors can be a simple yet powerful way to boost your mental wellbeing. Whether it’s a walk in the park, sitting by the river, or exploring the beautiful countryside around Winchester, being in a natural environment helps us feel calmer and more grounded. It offers a chance to switch off from the pressures of daily life and reconnect with the world around us. Taking a moment to breathe in fresh air, listen to birdsong, or simply having the sun on your face can make all the difference when you’re feeling overwhelmed, sometimes, nature is the perfect place to start.
Exercise; yoga, running:
Moving your body is a great way to improve your mood and mental health. Whether you prefer the calm and focus of yoga or the energising feeling of going for a run, exercise can help release stress and boost your confidence. Yoga offers a chance to stretch, breathe, and centre yourself, while running can give you a sense of freedom and achievement. It doesn’t have to be about speed or perfection – it’s about finding what makes you feel better. Discover the kind of movement that works for you, helping you stay strong both mentally and physically.
Mindfulness; meditation, breathing techniques, colouring:
Mindfulness is all about focusing on the present moment and calming the mind. Whether it’s through meditation, practicing breathing techniques, or even something creative like colouring, these activities can help reduce feelings of anxiety and stress. Taking a few minutes to focus on your breath or immersing yourself in a mindful activity can make a big difference to how you feel. WYC encourages the power of mindfulness to help you regain balance when life feels overwhelming. Explore what works for you, and remember, small moments of mindfulness can lead to lasting positive change.
Crafting:
Engaging in crafting can be a wonderful way to express yourself and take a break from life’s pressures. Whether it’s painting, knitting, making jewellery, or any creative project, crafting helps you focus on the present and channel your energy into something positive. It’s not about creating a masterpiece; it’s about the joy of making something with your hands and letting your mind unwind. At Winchester Youth Counselling, we invite you to explore crafting as a way to relax, boost your mood, and feel a sense of accomplishment.
Journaling/writing:
Writing down your thoughts and feelings can be a powerful tool for self-reflection and emotional release. Journaling allows you to process your experiences, express your emotions, and gain clarity when things feel overwhelming. Whether you’re jotting down what’s on your mind, writing stories, or simply noting what you’re grateful for, it’s a great way to connect with yourself. How about trying to use writing as a personal outlet to help manage stress and organise your thoughts? There’s no right or wrong way to do it – it’s your space to be free and honest with yourself.
Songwriting/listening to music:
Music has the power to deeply influence how we feel, whether through listening to your favourite songs or creating your own through songwriting. It can help lift your mood, provide comfort, or express emotions that are difficult to put into words. Songwriting offers a creative outlet to explore your thoughts and feelings, while simply listening to music can be a soothing escape or a way to energise yourself. Music can be a powerful tool for healing and self-expression. Whether you’re creating or listening, focus on what makes you feel better through the sounds that resonate with you.
Being present; digital detox:
In a world full of constant digital distractions, taking time to be present can make a real difference to your mental health. A digital detox – stepping away from screens and social media – can help you reconnect with yourself and those around you. It allows space for meaningful communication, whether that’s spending quality time with loved ones or simply enjoying your own company without distractions. At Winchester Youth Counselling, we encourage you to be mindful of your screen time and focus on being fully present in the moment. Finding time for real-life connections and quiet reflection can be a simple but effective way to feel more grounded and in control.
Communication:
Talking about what’s on your mind can be one of the most important steps towards feeling better. Whether it’s sharing your feelings with a trusted friend, family member, or a professional, communication helps relieve stress and makes challenges feel less overwhelming. It’s okay to reach out when things feel tough – sometimes just being heard is enough to lighten the load. We believe that open, honest communication is key to mental wellbeing. Don’t be afraid to express yourself; talking can be a great way to work through emotions and find the support you need.
