How to Manage Stress and Anxiety as a Teenager

Life as a teenager can feel overwhelming at times. Between schoolwork, friendships, family expectations, and social media, it’s easy to feel stressed or anxious. If you’re struggling, you’re not alone, many young people experience these feelings. The good news is that there are ways to manage stress and anxiety, so they don’t take over your life. Here are some tips to help you cope:
- Recognise Your Triggers
Understanding what makes you feel anxious or stressed can help you manage those feelings. Is it exams? Social situations? A packed schedule? Identifying your triggers can make it easier to find solutions.
- Take Breaks and Set Realistic Goals
Trying to do everything at once can be exhausting. Instead of overwhelming yourself, break tasks into small, manageable steps. Make time for breaks—whether it’s listening to music, watching a show, or going for a short walk.
- Breathe and Stay Present
When anxiety creeps in, simple breathing exercises can help. Mindfulness—focusing on the present moment—can also reduce stress. Apps like Headspace and Calm offer guided mindfulness exercises.
- Get Moving
Exercise is a great stress reliever. You don’t have to be an athlete, dancing in your room, walking with a friend, or even stretching can help boost your mood.
- Talk to Someone You Trust
You don’t have to go through this alone. Talking to a friend, family member, teacher, or counsellor can make a big difference. Sometimes, just sharing how you feel can lighten the load.
- Limit Social Media Time
While social media can be a great way to stay connected, it can also contribute to anxiety. If scrolling leaves you feeling down, try reducing your screen time or unfollowing accounts that make you feel pressured or unhappy.
- Get Enough Sleep
Lack of sleep can make stress and anxiety worse. Aim for 8-10 hours of sleep each night to help your mind and body recover.
